MODULE OUTLINE

  • We start this course by teaching you a little bit about our journey at Fush, as a business trying to normalise te reo Māori and share our language and culture with our community.

  • In this video, Anton teaches you the foundations of good te reo Māori… pronunciation! It’s a long module, but it’s absolutely vital to learn good pronunciation before exploring some of the more complex areas of te reo Māori. If you’re new to te reo Māori, make sure you start here.

  • In this short module, Anton will share his whakaaro (ideas) about how you can build your confidence by dropping everyday kupu Māori (Māori words) into your sentences. It’s a great way to introduce others to the language, as well as practice your own pronunciation at the same time.

  • Is it true that if you can’t say the whole sentence in te reo Māori, then you shouldn’t say anything at all? Let’s bust the myth! This module will introduce you to one of Anton’s favourite language acquisition strategies, pidgin Māori. Begin to construct te reo Māori sentences on your very own, but if there’s the odd word you that you don’t quite know, that’s fine, use the English word! The most important thing is communication and that’s what pidgin Māori is all about!

  • In this module you’ll learn how to say an action sentence in te reo Māori. Not only that, you’ll learn how to negate that sentence too. By the end of this lesson, you’ll be saying sentences completely in te reo Māori!

  • In this module you’ll learn how to use te reo Māori to describe things and people. Not only that, you’ll learn how to describe what something isn’t as well. By the end of this lesson, you’ll be saying even more sentences completely in te reo Māori!

  • In this video you’ll learn all about how to craft and and write a basic pepeha so that you never have to feel uncomfortable at a hui again. We discuss how both Māori and non-Māori can respectfully perform pepeha and keep themselves culturally safe.

  • Anton shares his journey as a parent trying to raise bilingual tamariki (children). In this video, he peels back the curtain and talks about some of the struggles and lessons, as well as some of the highlights. If you’re a parent, aunty, uncle or a grandparent looking to connect with a tamariki in te reo Māori, this is a must watch!

  • How do you earn mana? How do we keep it? And why is it even important anyway? In this video, Anton shares what his teachers have taught him about the importance of manaakitanga and why it’s a crucial part of earning and keeping mana.

  • In this video, we briefly cover the He Whakaputanga (The Declaration of Independence), as well as look at the document, before exploring Te Tiriti o Waitangi itself and unpacking the crucial points of contention between the two translations. We learn about some of the central characters associated with Te Tiriti, and we begin to look at the NZ Land Wars.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is an enormous kaupapa (topic) and is covered in much more detail in our next series, but this is part 1!

“Learning te reo Māori from Anton is fun and easy! Give it a go!”
